EMBODIMENT PRACTICE

PRACTICE SUPERVISION

Increasingly, organisations are recognising the value of practice supervision for staff doing transformation work. Organisations that invest in supervision see enhanced project outcomes, stronger retention of skilled practitioners, and reduced burnout risk in high-complexity roles.

This is because practice supervision weaves together three essential dimensions - reflective practice, power analysis and practice development - ensuring that we support practitioners and project outcomes holistically.

Processing the emotional and psychological complexity of systems work.

This work affects you. The power dynamics live in your body. The community pain you witness. The organizational resistance that grinds against what you know matters. The constant questioning of whether you're helping or hindering.

In our sessions, we create space to name and work with what you're actually experiencing - not just strategically, but emotionally and somatically. We explore what triggers you and why. We build capacity to stay present with discomfort rather than pushing through or shutting down. We develop sustainable practices for staying resourced in work that continuously depletes you.

This isn't therapy for your personal life, though they inevitably intersect. It's professional practice support that honors the psychological toll of transformation work while helping you show up with greater presence and skill.

You learn to recognize when you're operating from hurt rather than groundedness, when organizational pressure is dysregulating your nervous system, when you need to step back rather than push forward.

Three interconnected dimensions

POWER ANALYSIS

Naming and navigating power dynamics that others can't or won't see

Power operates everywhere in systems change work - structurally, interpersonally, somatically. Most training focuses on methods and frameworks while treating power as peripheral or abstract.

But power is central to everything we do. Who gets to define the problem? Whose knowledge counts as legitimate? Who has authority to make decisions? How do resources get allocated? Whose voices dominate meetings? What remains unsaid due to fear or social position?

Together, we map power dynamics in your specific context. We explore your own social position and privilege - not as confession but as awareness that makes you more effective. We recognize how power shows up somatically: the tension in your chest when someone talks over you, the shutdown when facing organizational resistance, the hypervigilance navigating cross-sector partnerships where institutional power is unequal.

We develop strategies for working with these dynamics rather than pretending they don't exist. We build capacity for facilitating across power differences. We name internalized patterns of both oppression and dominance. We create genuine pathways for distributed power - not participation theater.

This goes beyond intellectual analysis to embodied awareness. You learn to recognize when power is operating in the room, in your body, in the silence of what isn't being said.

PRACTICE DEVELOPMENT

Strengthening your capacity for facilitation, conflict work, and trauma-informed approaches

Even experienced practitioners have edges - situations where we feel uncertain, methods that don't quite fit, challenges that push us beyond our current capacity.

We work with what's actually arising in your practice: high-stakes facilitation when relationships are strained or trust has eroded. Conflict that goes deeper than positions into underlying needs and historical harm. Trauma-informed approaches for working with communities affected by ongoing violence or systemic failure. Cross-cultural facilitation when your own cultural assumptions are invisible to you.

We explore systems thinking applied to your specific challenges. Community-led approaches that genuinely distribute power rather than extracting knowledge. Organizational transformation when you're working inside institutions resistant to change. Strategic partnerships across sectors with unequal power. Vicarious trauma management for the long haul.

My approach draws on Process-Oriented Psychology and Deep Democracy, Asset-Based Community Development, Theory U and systems thinking, trauma-informed and healing-centered frameworks, and somatic approaches to group work.

But I don't teach "the method." I help you adapt and integrate approaches that fit your context, values, and strengths. I help you develop your own practice wisdom rather than copying someone else's.

IS THIS A GOOD FIT FOR YOU?

You’re likely a good fit if:

  • You facilitate community-led or systems change processes

  • You work at intersections of community and institutions

  • You navigate power dynamics and organizational resistance regularly

  • You want to deepen your practice, not just get quick advice

  • You're committed to genuine community leadership and distributed power

  • You recognise this work takes a toll and want skilled support

  • You value both analytical rigour and emotional/somatic awareness

  • - Your organisation values professional development (or you're willing to make the case for it)

This might not be right if:

  • You're looking for training in specific methods (I can refer you to excellent programs)

  • You want someone to tell you exactly what to do

  • You're not ready to examine your own power and position

  • You prefer purely intellectual/strategic approaches without emotional/somatic work

  • You need therapy for personal issues (I can refer you to appropriate support)

Detailed session information

  • I don't offer quick fixes or prescriptive advice.

Instead, I create space where you can slow down when everything feels urgent, name power dynamics others won't acknowledge, process difficult emotions without judgment, explore your edges where practice feels uncertain, build awareness of your patterns and privilege, strengthen capacity for complexity, and reconnect with why this matters.

This is collaborative work between practitioners. Not expert advice, but dialogue.

  • What does the organization gain from investing in supervision?

Organizations investing in practice supervision for transformation staff see:

Enhanced practice outcomes: Practitioners develop stronger facilitation skills, navigate stakeholder relationships more effectively, and design engagement that serves real decision-making.

Staff retention and sustainability: Proactive supervision helps skilled changemakers stay resourced, preventing costly turnover and maintaining organizational knowledge in work with high burnout rates.

Risk mitigation: Professional supervision provides reflective space to process the trauma, conflict, and power dynamics inherent in this work, reducing vicarious trauma and supporting wellbeing.

Strategic professional development: Unlike generic coaching, supervision addresses the unique demands of transformation work—power analysis, trauma-informed approaches, facilitation under pressure.

Culture signal: Investment demonstrates the organization understands what transformation work requires and values reflective practice, attracting and retaining serious practitioners.

  • Frame supervision as professional development that strengthens your capacity for specific work you're doing. Key talking points:

    • Connect to your work: "I'm navigating [specific project/challenge] and supervision would strengthen my capacity to [facilitate stakeholder relationships/navigate power dynamics/design trauma-informed engagement]."

    • Highlight organizational benefits: "The 6-session package provides structured professional development that will enhance outcomes on [specific work], build my capacity for future challenges, and help prevent burnout in high-complexity work."

    • Differentiate from other support: "This is supervision for transformation work—different from coaching (which focuses on goals) or peer support. The supervisor has both therapeutic training and 20 years of systems change experience."

    • Emphasize it's practice-focused: "This isn't therapy for my personal life. It's professional supervision focused on my practice—the kind of support that exists for clinical practitioners, adapted for systems change."

We've created a downloadable guide with a sample email template, detailed talking points, and answers to common manager questions.

  • The 6-session package ($1,320 inc GST) provides structured professional development that can be:

    • Spread over 6 months for ongoing support through a complex project or period

    • Concentrated for intensive skill-building around specific challenges

    • Tailored to address your organization's specific context

Sessions remain confidential between practitioner and supervisor, maintaining the safe reflective space necessary for this work. Organizations see the impact in stronger practice, greater confidence navigating complexity, and enhanced outcomes—without needing to know details of individual sessions.

  • Yes. While sessions maintain confidentiality between practitioner and supervisor, the supervision can be structured to support:

    • Specific projects or organizational priorities

    • Particular practice challenges (e.g., post-disaster engagement, financial sustainability communication, community-led approaches)

    • Development of organizational capacity in specific areas

The supervisor can adapt approaches to your organizational context while maintaining the confidential reflective space that makes supervision effective.

  • Many practitioners invest in their own professional development when organizational funding isn't available. If you're serious about doing this work sustainably over the long haul, supervision is an investment in your capacity.

That said, if your organization is open to the conversation, we're happy to provide information to support your request. The downloadable pitch guide includes ROI details, talking points, and answers to common manager questions.

Individual sessions can be booked on an ongoing basis rather than committing to the 6-session package if that works better for your situation.

  • Sessions are completely confidential between you and the supervisor. Your organization won't receive reports on session content or details of what you discuss.

What organizations will see is the impact in your practice: stronger facilitation, better stakeholder relationships, enhanced outcomes on projects, and greater sustainability in navigating high-complexity work. This is the same confidentiality model used in clinical supervision—necessary for creating the safe space where deep reflective work happens.
